Maria Lindfors is an associate professor at the Department of Education at Umeå University. Her research centres on innovative learning environments (ILEs), with a particular interest in how physical spaces, digital tools, and social relations shape teaching and learning. She examines how pedagogical practices and learning conditions are influenced by spatial design, relational dynamics, and material-digital entanglements in school settings. Informed by sociomaterial and postdigital perspectives, her work explores how educational environments condition the possibilities for participation, interaction, and support for both students and teachers. Her current research investigates how new learning environments reconfigure teaching practices, professional roles, and experiences of inclusion and engagement for both students and teachers, with a particular focus on spatial dimensions of competence and agency.
